- Actor Bill Murray was the victim of a hacker attack and lost $ 174 thousand.
- Hollywood star’s Ethereum wallet hacked after charity NFT auction
- One of the participants in the auction compensated for the losses, and Chainalysis took up the investigation
An unpleasant story happened to the famous actor Bill Murray. Immediately after the end of the charity event, which raised money for the treatment of a child, his Ethereum wallet was hacked by unknown persons. They stole almost all the funds intended for a seriously ill baby.
The actor’s wallet, which is managed by his representatives, was reportedly used to sell Bill Murray’s official NFTs. During a recent auction on Coinbase NFT, the comedian’s partners managed to raise a total of 119.2 WETH ($185,000). All proceeds were to go to charity.
The suspicious activity was first spotted by Gavin Gillas of Project Venkman, a blockchain startup co-owned by Murray. He found an unauthorized transaction at 108 WETH. It was followed by another operation at 1.73 WETH. Thus, most of the collected funds fell into the hands of malefactors.
According to Gillas, hackers could have accessed the wallet using the work computer of an employee of Project Venkman. This is evidenced by the fact that in parallel with the hacking of the actor’s wallet, digital assets also disappeared from one of the developers.
In addition to cryptocurrency, the mentioned wallet contained 800 NFTs from the Bill Murray 1000 collection. However, these assets were not affected, and after the hack was discovered, they were transferred to another address.
Fortunately, the lost WETH was quickly replaced. One of the participants in the auction donated cryptocurrency to recoup the losses. Representatives of the actor noted that if the stolen funds are returned, they will be added to the total amount of donations.
The investigation is carried out by specialists from Chainalysis. Bill Murray’s partners also approached Coinbase, asking for help tracking down the attackers.
